What You Can Do Right Now To Help Get Mississippi Covered

This year, Cover the Uninsured Week is highlighting ways everyone can help get America covered. Go to www.CoverTheUninsured.org to:

  1. Tell Congress that health coverage must be their top priority. If you need facts and figures for letter-writing activities, pertinent data can be found here. To find information on current legislative activities, click here.
  2. Spread the word by sending a Cover the Uninsured Week e-mail to your friends asking them to help get America covered.
  3. Get involved in Cover the Uninsured Week activities and show your support - download materials to hold your own event. Involve your faith community too - find out how here.
  4. Read the Guide to Finding Health Coverage in Mississippi to help those in our state find coverage.

To get involved in our Cover Mississippi coalition, contact Shawn Lea at (800) 289-8884 or slea@mhanet.org.

In Mississippi, there are 511,000 uninsured people ages 18-64. That is about 18 percent of the population. As many as 40 percent are eligible for programs but are not enrolled. To access the latest news about coverage initiatives, research and news in Mississippi and nationwide, visit the Cover Mississippi blog.

Today, 45 million Americans have no health insurance – including more than 8 million children. In 2002, the number of people without health coverage increased by more than 2 million, the largest one-year increase in a decade. Unfortunately, the problem won’t get better soon. Rising health care costs continue to undermine the ability of individuals, businesses and state governments to purchase health care coverage. Reversing this disturbing trend, elevating this issue on the national and local agendas, educating Americans about the problem and providing immediate assistance to the uninsured and small business owners are the goals of Cover the Uninsured Week 2006.

The Covering Kids Coalition, a statewide group focused on ensuring health coverage for all Mississippi children, is beginning to work on plans for Cover the Uninsured Week 2006 and other pertinent community events. If you are interested in joining the group or helping with the observation, e-mail Shawn Lea.

Every child needs coverage for Christmas. Due to Hurricane Katrina, many more families are now eligible for benefits. Make sure that you and your family take a moment to see if you now qualify!
